Average Weather

Whereas the weather describes what is happening in the atmosphere at any time or over a short period of time, the climate describes what is happening over a longer time period or over a large area. The climate of an area is concerned with the average weather conditions which are taken over a year or more. The climate can change, but usually very slowly, over tens, hundreds or even thousands of years. There are many different types of climate on the Earth, divided up into climate zones. Britain lies in the temperate climate zone, with winters that are not too cold and summers that are not too hot.
