Earth Summit

In June 1992 countries from all over the world came together in the capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, to talk about our environmental problems. This was the Earth Summit, and was the largest meeting of nation states ever held.

At the Earth Summit, countries tried to figure out a way of protecting the environment without affecting their economies or making people poorer. The idea that countries and their citizens should become more sustainable became the focus of the meeting, identified in a set of principles and actions that became Agenda 21.

As well as Agenda 21, countries also made agreements to protect the climate, the forests and wildlife.
