Sustainable Development

At the moment, our development is not sustainable. This means that it cannot continue in its present form without harmful consequences in the future, both to people and to the environment. Our economies rely too much on natural resources that are being used up too fast and cannot be replaced. Our economic development also produces too much pollution.

Sustainable Development means having an economy which provides a decent standard of living for people alive today, but which will not prevent those of the future from sharing an equally high standard. At the Earth Summit in 1992, countries agreed to develop more sustainably, to protect the environment, reduce pollution from economic activities like energy generation, transport and waste production, conserve natural resources and safeguard the quality of life of all people.
